Patterns

Jessica Chen | August 2022 | Umécuaro

Jessica Chen is a Chinese-Canadian visual artist, born and raised in Toronto, with family roots in Taiwan, Singapore, and Fujian, China. She is interested in creating meditative and emotional landscapes through abstract pattern-making inspired by natural forms. Much of her work is informed by her travels in Southeast Asia observing plant life in rainforests, and the symbiotic relationships between flora and fauna.

More recently, Jessica has been living in Oaxaca, Mexico, learning from different contemporary artists working in textile, natural dyes, printmaking, and sculpture. This experience is broadening her art practice to further consider different material applications for creative expression, and the significance of place, people, and identity expressed through making.
